Colombia Travelogue

For real southern hospitality, give Colombia a try.

“Come on down!” was once the welcoming greeting for a popular US TV game show, but it could well be the motto for the country of Colombia. For many people who follow media reports, Colombia is a place where one must fear kidnapping by narco-traffickers, but this scenic, ethnically diverse nation, located on the northwest tip of the South American continent gives new meaning to the term “southern hospitality.”

Bogota, the capital and largest city, is of course the obligatory first stop for any visitor arriving by air. Daily flights from Miami and Atlanta make getting there easy. The drive into the city from El Dorado International Airport is short, and the first thing that impresses you is that, despite the media reports of violence, it seems so peaceful. In fact, the crime rate in Bogota is less than cities like Caracas and Rio de Janeiro.

Bogota is a great place for shopping, dining, and night life, provided one stays from the poorer slums which, like many major urban areas, is the locus for a lot of the street crime. In the central part of town, there are stores where you can buy bags of Colombian coffee beans for a fraction of the price you pay in the US; restaurants that serve gargantuan steaks that melt in your mouth; and bars with great entertainment. The historic Candelaria district of central Bogota is a must see. The best time is just after sundown when people are off work and strolling.

You will, of course, not want to confine your visit to Bogota. Colombia has much more to offer. The national airline operates flights to other major tourist attractions, with few being more than an hour from the capital.

Here are just a few of the highlights outside Bogota:

Santa Marta, a seaside town in the Department of Magdalena, on the Caribbean coast in the northwest has great beaches, some of the friendliest people, in a country famed for its friendliness, and is a great place to just kick back.

Cartagena, in the Department of Bolivar, is reported to be home to Colombia’s most beautiful women. Of course, the people of Barranquilla and Medellin will disagree, so it is perhaps a good idea to visit all three and decide for yourself.

Arrecifes Beach, located in the Tayrona National Natural Park is one of the main destinations for eco-tourists. With its abundant natural resources and beautiful scenery, Colombia has become one of Latin America’s ecotourism destinations of choice.

This is just a sampler platter of what’s on the menu when you go to Colombia. For the full array of what the country has to offer, you just have to ‘go on down!’

Hiking Guide for Women and Girls

Women have different considerations when hiking than their male counterparts. Therefore, I thought it appropriate to address only the female population for this particular article.

Some of the issues that we as women hikers face include a curvier, often shorter figure that requires different outfitting. Women also care more for their appearance, even when they are hiking. As women, our bodies also present us with issues regarding urinating and our monthly cycle. And, though safety and security is also an issue for men, it holds special significance for women.

Outfitting Yourself for a Hike

There are a couple of truly essential items to consider when outfitting yourself for a hike. The first is proper equipment of your feet. I was reminded of this a few years ago when I allowed a salesperson to talk me into a pair of boots that I wasn't quite sure about. Sure enough within a couple of days of beginning the hike the pain in my feet was excruciating. You can not enjoy a hike or even make it very far if you don't have good footwear.

That being said, I'd like to actually begin with the socks. A good pair of socks can keep you from getting blisters. If you are used to settling for socks that don't truly fit now is the time to spend the extra money on a pair that does. A sock that doesn't quite fit creates a pocket of fabric that will rub against your skin all day as you walk. While in a normal day at the office this would not be an issue if you spend all day walking you will notice and blisters will form.

One option is to layer your socks. Find a well fitting inner sock and wear the bulkier hiking sock around that. This has the added benefit of allowing the inner sock to pull double duty as the sock you were with your camp shoes. (For those of you not currently using camp shoes I highly recommend it. They are a light weight shoe that you wear around the campsite. After a long days hike it is nice to take off the heavier hiking boots and let your feet breath in a pair of light weight shoes.) Another option is to find a company like Garmont that carries a line of women's socks. The company has taken into consideration that fact that women's feet and legs typically have a higher instep, lower calf, longer Achilles tendon, narrower heel and narrower toe box and designed their socks accordingly.

After you've found yourself a good couple of hiking socks take them to the store with you to buy your boots. The best advise I can give you on hiking shoes is to trust yourself. If the shoe doesn't feel right, keep looking. Plan to spend a good deal of time finding the right shoe. Take the time to walk around in the shoe. Stores like REI have hiking ramps that you can walk up and down to test the shoe. If the store you are at does not have a ramp, test them on a ramp at home. As long as you don't wear them outside you can return them if they fail the ramp test.

One final word about shoes, do break them in before you go on your trip. Wear them walking for at least a week before you leave. (This will also encourage you to do some walking each day before your trip, which, if it's been awhile since you've had real exercise, can be a good way to start preparing yourself for the demands of the hike.)

When choosing a pack consider that your hips are curvier and your shoulders are narrower. There are many women's backpacks available now, but again test the fit on your figure. Have the sales clerk assist you with fitting the pack. Walk around the store with some weight in your pack. If the straps rub against your neck or the weight does not distribute properly on your hips and shoulders try another pack.

Another consideration is your sleeping bag. Women tend to like more warmth when they are sleeping. We are also typically shorter than men. For myself, I liked the semi-mummy bag. It fit closer around the feet and chest providing more warmth and I was able to find it in a size that fit my height.

One final thing to consider when outfitting yourself is to pack light. You will not be able to carry the same weight as your larger male counterpart, so don't try. Choose light weight gear and eliminate the unnecessary items. It may seem important while sitting on your couch at home but imagine having to carry it all day long. Even little things add up quickly.

Clean and Sanitary

As women we like to be presentable. I have seen guys take a week long hike with one pair of clothing and no soap or deodorant. A woman wouldn't make that same choice.

However, there can be a tendency to go overboard. I was once on a hiking trip with a teenage girl who smuggled along her make-up because she couldn't imagine being seen without it. For any of you with similar ideas, a couple of words of advise: a freshly scrubbed face looks very put together when compared to the unscrubbed, unshaved faces of your male companions and the scent of make-up can attract bears to your site. Also, the girl who smuggled along the make-up ended up being to exhausted to worry about putting on make-up each day.

That being said, what are some of the ways a woman can stay fresh and clean on her hike? I hike in the mountains so unless we were getting a late start (even summer mornings are cold) or were stopping early stepping into the water to bath was out of the question. However, you can use a pot of water and a washcloth to wipe away much of the daily grime.

I am also one of those people cursed with oily hair, so I would wash my hair each morning before starting camp chores. However, if you don't have oily hair a nice hat is a wonderful choice. It also keeps the sun off your face and out of your eyes.

An added toiletry concern for women is our monthly cycle. Should you be hiking during this time bring an extra zip-lock bag in which to store your sanitary napkins or tampons and you can burn them at the end of each day. The smell will not be pleasant so wait until everyone is done using the fire.

Another concern is bathroom breaks. In the past I've found a well placed fallen log to lean against. However, I recently heard about pee funnels for women that allow them to pee standing up. On my next hiking trip I definitely plan on investing in one.

Safety and Hiking

Women have always had to be more concerned about safety than men. Unfortunately, this is also true when hiking. The most obvious solution is to travel in a group. If your goal is to absorb the peace and tranquility of nature remember that during the day people will hike at different paces.

Don't give personal information to strangers. It is okay to be friendly, and I have found that most hikers are, but be careful how much you share. Let people know that you are with a group.

However, if you need to hike alone remember to tell your friends and family when you are leaving, when you will return and your hiking itinerary. If possible invest in a tracking devise so that you can be tracked remotely.

Statistically you are safer in the wilderness than in the city. So, take a deep breath of the fresh outdoor air and drink in the beauty of nature.

Beautiful Latin Women

Beautiful Latin Women

Okay, I have done the women of Bollywood, Japanese actresses, Filipina actresses, Chinese actresses and Brazilian models.
So for this Hub, I'm going to do some of the beautiful Latin women that have graced the stage and screen.
This is my no means all of them, there are hundreds of lovely latinas out there, but this is just a few.
Starting off with someone who is pretty much a legend.....

Salma Hayek
How could you even consider doing a Latin Hub without Salma?
She's an actress, director, television and film producer, she has donated thousands to shelters for battered women and anti-domestic violence groups, and she is the first Mexican national to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Salma was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico.
Her mother was an opera singer and talent scout, and her father was an oil company executive.
Salma wanted to become a gymnast as a child, and she almost made it to the Mexican national team, but her father put an end to that.
She was sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, at the age of twelve, but the nuns kicked her out for "behavioral problems" so she went back to Mexico.
Salma was all set to begin a career International Relations and was studying at the Universidad Iberoamericana when she suddenly dropped out to become an actress.
Her first role was in the Spanish-language telenovela, Un Nuevo Amanecer in 1988.
She moved on to another telenovela, Teresa and then to the short lived sitcom on Fox starring comedian Sinbad called (naturally) The Sinbad Show.
Salma got her first big break when she appeared in Allison Anders' film Mi Vida Loca. That lead to the 1994 film El Callejón de los Milagros where she caught the eye of Robert Rodriguez, who cast her in the role of Carolina in (one of my favorite films) 1995's Desperado.
She has gone on to appear in over thirty movies including 2002's Frida which garnered Salma a ton of nominations including Academy Award for Best Actress, BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

Roselyn Sanchez
Okay, Roselyn Sánchez's career hasn't been as stellar as Salma's but she is still beautiful.
Roselyn was born on April 2nd 1973 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
At an early age she showed interest in dancing and acting putting on shows for her family. She put all that aside and went to University of Puerto Rico to study marketing like her father and brothers, but her heart wasnt in it, so she dropped out to move to New York and study acting, dancing and singing.
Her film debut was in a small role in the 1992 film Captain Ron with Martin Short and Kurt Russell.
In 1993, Roselyn won the Miss Puerto Rico Petite contest and in 1994 she won the international title of Miss American Petite.
Since Captain Ron, she has gone on to appear in eighteen films including Yellow in 2006 (which she wrote and produced), Edison (2005), Cayo (also in 2005) and Rush Hour 2 in which she also stared with the beautiful Zhang Ziyi.
Zhang Ziyi AND Roselyn Sanchez in one movie?
That almost makes up for Chris Tucker!

Tessie Santiago
You may remember Tessie Santiago from the syndicated action-adventure television series Queen of Swords.
The show didn't do too well when it aired, but it has built up a cult following on the internet.
Tessie played Doña Maria Teresa (Tessa) Alvarado/The Queen of Swords in the show.
Tessie herself was born on August 10, 1975 in Miami, Florida and is of Cuban decent.
After Queen of Swords, Tessie went on to appear in the TV series Good Morning, Miami, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Kitchen Confidential , One on One and One Hot Summer.
As far as movies go, she has appeared in The Way She Moves (2000), The Way Back Home (2005) , Break-In (2006) and the straight to video release, The Cell 2 (2009).

Carmen Dominicci
Carmen Dominicci was born on July 15, 1966 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
She's a model, television reporter and PSA representative.
Carmen started out doing TV commercials and beauty pageants in Puerto Rico in the 1980s and represented Puerto Rico in modeling competitions in United States and Europe.
Then she started acting in theater and in mini-series which helped to make her famous.
Carmen left modeling and acting and started studying journalism.
She Magna graduated Cum Laude from Universidad del Sagrado Corazon and has won several awards during her career including three Emmy regional awards, a Paoli and a Ace award.
Carmen has appeared on Primer impacto, Don Francisco presenta and El show de Cristina.

Giselle Blondet
Actress, model and TV Host Giselle Blondet, was born on January 9, 1966 in New York, New York.
Giselle began her rise to fame at the age of fourteen, she she stared working on Puerto Rico's telenovelas.
She appeared in "El ídolo" (1980), "Cantaré para tí" (1985) and "La cruz de papel" (1986) among others.
Her career really took off in 1997, when she became the co-host of Univisión's international show Despierta América.
Giselle's path hasnt been an easy one.
She left the wildly popular Despierta América to host her own show about real-life tragedies called Historias para Contar.
But the show was canceled before it was broadcast. (Was it on Fox?)
Then she did a movie with Jose Feliciano (yes THAT José Feliciano) and Raul De Molina (a well known television personality) called Feliz Navidad.
It was supposed to be released (amazingly) around Christmas, but it never showed up in theaters. (Although it did get a limited US release in November 2006).
Giselle was hosting Nuestra belleza latina, a mix of a beauty contest and a reality TV that seemed to be doing really well.
But I have read that she wont be back for the 2010 season.
